Background Information:

The University of Illinois and Advanced Micro Devices proudly present the 20th annual AMD Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition, held during Engineering Open House on March 9th and 10th, 2007. The contest is sponsored by Advanced Micro Devices and held in honor of W.J. "Jerry" Sanders, an alumnus of the University of Illinois. Advanced Micro Devices endorses this contest to inspire excellence in engineering.

Each year, engineering students of all disciplines build robots to achieve predefined objectives and compete for more than $5,000 in prizes. This year's competition will consist of four teams competing simultaneously to move colored hula hoops and/or Frisbees to designated drop-off zones in the arena. Automated colored lighting underneath each of the four raised drop-off platforms determines which platform each colored object must be delivered to in order to score points. The colors will shift randomly in pre-determined intervals; these intervals will speed up as the round progresses, encouraging teams to build quick robots. While the basic goal of transporting hula hoops and Frisbees may seem simple, the addition of a randomly changing environment will keep competitors on edge during every round.

The competition promotes engineering disciplines and offers students a chance to demonstrate their technical abilities and creativity while applying knowledge learned in engineering courses. Overall, the design competition presents a well-rounded multi-disciplinary engineering challenge to future engineers.
